Sunday's Service |
Get to know.... |
|
Stepping out Again and Again! We find ourselves this week with the Hebrew people in that desert, making a little progress, but then not . . . needing to start over again! On this Memorial Sunday we remember those whose journey has taken them beyond this life, as we celebrate the grace of God in the sacrament of Communion.
In Our Prayers:Lois Elliot
Daylight Savings Ends! Don't forget to set your clocks back Saturday night! And extra hour to sleep before service on Sunday!
ANNUAL TEEN TINSEL GIFT TREE We’re kicking off our annual Teen Tinsel Tree gift project on Sunday, November 6. Teens who are at-risk or from very low income families are often overlooked by holiday assistance programs. We’re inviting our congregation to help brighten the winter holidays for these teens by filling a stocking. Handmade Christmas stockings, donated by the Senior Center Wisconsin Warmer Quilters, will be available in the Narthex for you to “check-out and fill-up”. Donations will be due back by December 4. Cash donations are also welcome. For more information contact Dorry Wilner, 236-5714. 3rd-5th Graders are Invited to the Pizza Bowl-a-rama! Third through Fifth Graders and their friends are invited to Pizza and Bowling on Sunday, November 6. We’ll meet at Shoreview Lanes, 1823 Grove St., right after church (around 11:30am) for a pizza lunch and bowling. There is NO COST for this activity. No experience necessary. Youth can be picked up at 1:30pm.
We will be having a planning meeting on Nov. 6 to map out our fund-raising strategy for this years youth mission trip. November Tidings is available on the website. Click Here to get to the website and see the lastest copy as well as be able to print a November activites calendar.
Tuesday Night Spirituality Discussions Is there really just one God for all these faiths? Do we ever have the right to tell a lie or do something bad? Is there such a thing as divine healing? Is there really a devil? Was Jesus really raised from the dead? Have you ever wondered about these things as you have traveled on our faith's journey? If so, you're not alone. And while we may never have the answers, it's interesting to hear other people's thoughts on such important faith-based questions. These are the very kinds of topics we discuss each week during our Tuesday Night Spirituality Discussion Group get-togethers. The group isn't real large so you don't have to worry about getting lost amongst a bunch of people, but most everyone who comes is a fellow FCC member so you'll be among friends. Come check it out. If you just want to be a silent observer, that's perfectly fine. Or you can jump in with both feet and share to your heart's content. Either way, we promise the 90 minutes you share with us will be uplifting, enlightening and will certainly make you think. Please consider joining us some Tuesday starting at 7 pm right here at the church. We hope to see you soon! EMPTY BOWLS 2011 LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING YOU THERE November 13, 2011 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Becket's 501 City Center, Oshkosh, WI

Joe Wiedenmeier Joe likens his childhood to that of “Timmy” on the old Lassie TV series. Even though his mother was from Oshkosh and His father from Fond du Lac, Joe and his sister, Shelly, grew up on a 17-acre “farm” in Palmer Lake, Colorado – about 17 miles north of Colorado Springs – where their parents raised horses, sheep, chickens and one cow. Times were lean and the Wiedenmeiers didn’t get a TV until Joe was 7-years-old, but he enjoyed listening to radio dramas, such as Gunsmoke, Fibber McGee and Molly, and Amos and Andy. The family attended the Little Log Church in Palmer Lake, a non-denominational parish whose minister was a Quaker woman. Joe’s father died while he was still in his youth. After that, Joe’s mom and the two kids moved back to the Fox Valley and Joe graduated from Oshkosh High School in 1969. He worked for a very brief period of time at Castle Pierce Printing before entering the U.S. Navy where he spent two years on active duty as a dental technician. Joe met his future wife, Mary, in 1971 and the couple was married in 1974. They have two sons: Brian, 28, and Ross, 23. Today, Joe works as the IT director for Oshkosh-based Unified Catholic Schools. He is also the president of PFLAG (Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians and Gays) of the Greater Oshkosh Area. Joe is involved with the Media Ministry here at First Congregational Church, as well, where he works with pastors and other staff persons to create media presentations that provide support for sermons, classes and other presentations. And when needed, he helps out with the computer system to make sure it’s running in the most efficient and productive manner. The first experience Joe and Mary had with FCC was the Christmas Eve service about 9 years ago. They fell in love with the service itself, as well as the music and the people. Though they were members of Algoma Boulevard Methodist Church for a while, for the next 5 or 6 years they kept returning for Christmas Eve service at FCC before finally joining the church three-and-a-half years ago. Even though Joe and Mary felt both churches were open, welcoming and friendly, pastoral changes at Algoma Boulevard Methodist caused them to seek something more stable and, of course, they were welcomed with open arms by Ralph, Carol, the staff, volunteers and other members at FCC. It is that welcoming atmosphere and sense of belonging, beyond Sundays and beyond the church itself that Joe says is his favorite thing at FCC. GALLERY WALK and CONCERT! On Saturday November 5th First Congregational Church will be hosting Gallery Walk as part of our Centennial Celebration. Marty Robinson & Friends will be playing jazz sets from six until nine in our beautiful sanctuary. We will also be serving sweets and beverages in the narthex for all to enjoy while you listen to the music. Bring your friends and family for a great night out. Donations are appreciated
