Sunday's Service: January 8, 2012

Get to know....

A Centennial Celebration This Sunday!

A service for giving thanks for the gift of our sanctuary that we have enjoyed for 100 years, and for looking toward the century that stretches out before us!  A mixture of past and present, the worship hour will include a hymn sung at the dedication service January 7, 1912, and a Hip-hop Invitation to Worship written and presented by Erik Koepnick who will also be bringing us the Centennial sermon, Reflecting on Our Future.  Erik, who attended worship here as a student at UW Oshkosh, and who graduated from Chicago Theological Seminary last spring, is serving on the staff of Bethel-Bethany UCC in Milwaukee.  A Brass Ensemble led by Dr. Marty Robinson will complement our music led by Joanne and the Chancel Choir.  The service will culminate with a joyful celebration of the Lord's Supper.  Come and help us lean boldly into the future, "stepping out into a new century."

In Our Prayers

Give thanks for successful surgeries and ongoing recoveries for Ted Wojahn and grandson Curt.

Centennial Organ Concert, This Saturday

Our Casavant Opus 469 pipe organ will be bursting with joy as we celebrate its 100th birthday, Jared Stellmacher regaling us with sparkling pieces by Bach, Franck, Widor, and more!  Jared, who studied organ here with Joanne, has dazzled us before, and this concert will be no different. The audience will get to be part of it too, singing that old, sturdy hymn of the faith, O God, Our Help in Ages Past.  The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. -- you may want to be here early for close parking and "your" pew!  An elegant reception will follow.

Jared is the Director of Music and Organist at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Hinsdale, Illinois.  With degrees from UW Madison and Yale Institute of Sacred Music, Jared is recognized as one of the finest young organists in the country.  Come and enjoy his great skills on our wonderful instrument.

SUICIDE PREVENTION

Presenter: Doug Bisbee, Community for Hope

Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death among Americans    between the ages of 15-24 and the second leading cause of death among those between the ages of 25-34. Equally alarming is the fact that since 2007 there has been a rise in suicide among veterans. Many suicides can be prevented, but not all. On a nationwide basis, approximately 32,500 deaths are attributed to suicide annually. This is a low number because it is sometimes difficult to prove suicide. More than 240,500 people are devastated by suicide each year. Also, the risk of death by suicide is 2-3 times greater in youth who feel they may be gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered or questioning. LGBTQ youths' ability to "blend in" with other youth; and bullying can

affect the rate of attempts. Community for Hope was established in 2001 in response to a growing number of teen suicides in Oshkosh. While their initial focus was on teen suicide, their current focus includes all age groups. Doug Bisbee executive director of the Community for Hope will join us this morning to tell us how to recognize if someone we know might be suicidal, and how to help them, if they are.

At times the Adult Ed Ministry Group sets aside a Sunday or two to discuss topical magazine articles or other pertinent issues; Jan. 15 will be one of those Sundays. Sojourners Magazine recently published an article entitled “Which Side Are You On?,” which discusses the two diametrically opposed ways of being people of the same God. This thought-provoking piece was written by Wes Howard-Brook, a teacher at Seattle University, and also the author of Unveiling Empire, Becoming Children of God, and “Come Out, My People!” The article can be found online at http://www.sojo.net/magazine/2011/12/which-side-are-you. But for those who do not wish to log onto the site, create a user name/password, etc. for this free site, we are including the article with this week's Member Bridge. Feel free to read this article at your leisure and then join us this morning to discuss it. (You may want to print off a copy and bring it to church in case you want to refer to it during the discussion.) We look forward to seeing you Sunday, Jan. 15 beginning at 9am in the church Lounge.

January 15th discussion: See the article to print by clicking here.  You will find it under the newsletter section on the front page, right hand side.
